Hearing the City (2023)

Image
"Hearing the City" Bio Andaru Materials: Iron, acrylic, polyurethane, acrylic board, paper Dimensions: Varied dimensions  Year: 2023 Hearing the City embodies the spirit of urban chaos through visual language and the tangible essence of sound. This concept is realized by merging symbolic forms, materials, and intricate colors. Hearing the City is presented as a three dimensional ear sculpture made of irregular iron constructions, melting-like surfaces, and moss-green hues. Visually, the sculpture conveys that listening to the city is neither a passive nor neutral process—it is fraught with tension. The city's noise—both literal, such as honking horns, machinery, and crowds, and figurative, like social and economic pressures—renders the "ear" fragile, as though unable to withstand its intensity. For marginalized communities, urban sounds are not just physical disturbances but also symbols of inequality and the burdens of city life. The noise ...

Shield to Survive (2024)

Image
"Shield to Survive" Bio Andaru Materials: Iron and Acrylic on Canvas  Dimensions: 200 x 40 x 150 cm  Year: 2024 Shield to Survive as a narrative represents the essence of survival in the context of togetherness. The roof, which serves to protect from extreme weather such as rain, heat, or lightning, becomes a symbol of the protection provided by a community. In this painting installation, the use of conventional media such as acrylic on canvas adds layers of complexity to the narrative. Typically, canvas is seen as a stable and established medium in the art world, and this choice seems to suggest that survival is not only about withstanding external threats but also about how art itself must adapt to the changing times. The survival concept explored in "Shield to Survive" is not just about physical protection, but also about more subtle ways in which individuals and communities respond to and sustain their existence in an ever evolving art wo...

Manuscript of Existing (2024)

Image
"Manuscript of Existing" Bio Andaru Materials: Stainless steel, paper, acrylic, ink  Dimensions: Varied dimensions with 50 cm x 65 cm each, 8 panels Year: 2024 Manuscript of Existing is presented as an installation of 8 paper panels. The objects featured in this work include a dragon, traditional Javanese house construction, text, sculptures, graffiti, human figures, and animals. The highlights of this work are the dragon imagery that connects the panels, the unfinished construction, and the irregular composition of the images with a dynamic and brutal visual style. Manuscript of Existing essentially explains the complexity of existence. It portrays how existence is not something whole or clearly structured, but rather an ongoing process of continuous development, transformation, and uncertainty. The number 8, in many cultures, is often associated with cycles or eternity. The dragon, representing power and wisdom, in this work symbolizes an uninterrupt...
